Course Description:
Nuts & Bolts are our first basic series of workshops that teach inclusive best-practices. These workshops are for SETSS Providers, Paraprofessionals, General Education Colleagues, Administrators, etc. who are working for the first time in an inclusive environment, and for anyone who wants a review of the topic. Each session covers a different area of inclusive practice.

In Session One: Getting Started the physical supports of the SETSS handbook will be provided and discussions on using tools such as the Inclusive Classroom Checklist & the To Do List will enable participants set up systems to help structure their programs.

The content of Session Two: The Philosophy & Values of Inclusive Education teaches the models of inclusive education currently in place in New York City. The Participants learn the defining characteristics of each model and their inherent support of students.

Based on documents & memos from the NYCDOE's Central Office & District 75, Session Three: The Inclusive IEP teaches the page-by-page process of writing the IEP. Emphasizing the benefits of team knowledge, Participants learn to support an IEP meeting and construct a supportive and targeted IEP through small group work. The content of the IEP is assessed as a team via the use of the Quality Indicator Check List.

A PowerPoint introduces Session Four: Differentiating Instruction a workshop that models differentiating instruction through Literature Circles. Participants learn adaptations that are academically, culturally and socially acceptable in the community school.

The content of Session Five: Supporting Positive Behaviors includes behaviorist theories and role play of structural-behavioral supports in the community school. Participants learn research-based protocols and strategies that encourage students' self-monitoring of behavior. Based on case studies, participants learn to support positive behaviors through Functional Behavior Assessment and writing Behavior Intervention Plans.

Session Six: Teaming and Collaboration teaches Educators specific positive and negative events in the lives of Students and the impact on how they behave and are perceived in the environment. This workshop teaches Participants ways to develop individual and school-wide environments that encourage all people to thrive academically, socially and professionally. Also, models of co-teaching and tips on effective collaboration with colleagues are taught during this workshop.

The last in the Nuts and Bolts Series, Session Seven: Articulation and Transition provides Participants with an overview of life space and life span concerns for Students. Based on this knowledge, Participants create a working plan for addressing Students' life goals. State assessments, NYCDOE documents, SETSS-created documents and City-wide/State-wide resources that support Students complete the packet for this workshop.
