D75-19-323: The Writing Institute - Cohort 2
Literacy 2019/2020

Description: The overarching tenet of this three day writing institute is to increase teachers’ understanding of the fundamental principles of writing instruction and the structures that support daily writing. Participants will examine the developmental writing continuum, ranging from pre-conventional to conventional writing. They will learn to employ many pedagogical strategies and practices for implementing effective writing instruction through the use of the writing process. Teachers will have an opportunity to use authentic student writing as a vehicle to assess student strengths and plan for individualized instruction. This workshop will address the three texts types prioritized in the Next Generation Standards, narrative, informational, and opinion/argument. Each day of the series will address strategies and craft moves specific to the given text type. Teachers will learn how writing skills build upon each other to develop, strengthen and accelerate students’ composition skills. This workshop will lay the groundwork for designing, creating, and implementing writing instruction where students with diverse abilities will learn to take ownership of their writing.
