D75-19-170: ***CANCELLED*** Independence and Safety on the Stage and in the Classroom
Arts 2019/2020

Description: This session will provide participants with a deeper understanding of how safety and independence can be integrated into the theater and movement classroom and stage. The Essential Skills for Safety and Independence, also known as “ISI”, are a framework of skills that can be embedded in classroom instruction for students of all ages. Students benefit from integrating learning safety and independence skills at any age, leading to more independent navigation of the stage, an increase in self-esteem, and awareness of the body in different environments. Using Stage Areas and Directions, the PD will focus on integrating ISI practices to increase appropriate social behavior on and off stage, problem-solving to recognize obstacles and avoid danger when navigating the space, and awareness of different environments. Participants will also engage in purposeful movement patterns to generate body awareness to functionally move and navigate independently through environments. Additionally, participants will discuss and experience techniques to create stage markings that give access to successful stage navigation for all student learners.
